JDI to Participate in NTT DOCOMO's 5G Trial Sites
- Collaboration will help create new services using 5G mobile communication system -

November 16, 2016 (Tokyo, Japan) - Japan Display Inc. (JDI) today announced collaboration with NTT DOCOMO, INC. as a member of their 5G Trial Sites*1 initiative, which will enable customers to experience new services and content using a 5G mobile communications system*2.

JDI will participate in site trials and demonstrations, which are expected to create new multimedia services, such as delivery of 4K/8K high resolution movies and virtual reality (VR) using 5G's ultra-high-speed data and excess capacity.

In the trials, JDI is proposing various next-generation display technologies and products, such as fast-response (120Hz frame rate), 8K high resolution, ultra-high resolution and fast-response VR technology, "FULL ACTIVE" technology, and ultra-low power consumption based on LTPS technology.

The outcomes of these 5G trials will be demonstrated at the DOCOMO R&D Open House 2016, which will take place at the DOCOMO R&D Center in the Yokosuka Research Park near Yokohama, Japan, on November 17 and 18, 2016.

*1 The 5G Trial Sites, which will enable customers to experience services and content leveraging 5G technology, will be the latest step towards a commercial 5G system that DOCOMO expects to launch in 2020.

*2 5G is a much anticipated mobile communications technology that will address the expected explosion in the number of mobile devices and the massive increase in network traffic in the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) era. 5G boasts ultra-high-speed data rates beyond 10Gbps, excess capacity, extra-low latency and greatly expanded connectivity compared to existing mobile communications systems.
