Tokyo, Japan - May 22, 2017 - Japan Display Inc. (JDI) today announced the development of the world's highest resolution electronic paper (ePaper) backplane*1, the first collaborative development achievement since the announcement of the long-term strategic alliance with E Ink Holdings, (E Ink, TW: 8069) for ePaper business. Through the partnership with E Ink, JDI intends to diversify its business scope beyond its existing LCD market.

ePaper is a reflective display with visual qualities equivalent to traditional paper and the benefit of electronic updates. ePaper has a wide viewing angle, low power consumption, and vivid images even in bright sunlight.

The new development by JDI achieves resolutions of 400ppi and 600ppi, with the newly-designed built-in LTPS backplane. This will allow products using ePaper to have higher resolution, such as WXGA and FHD for displays, the same as high-end smartphones and high-quality printing.

JDI's goal in developing its latest ePaper backplane is for ePaper to empower not only high resolution and battery-powered devices such as eBooks, smartphons and tablets, but also future devices for the "Internet-of-Things" (IoT) .

In the future JDI intends to further expand its development to meet the diverse market requirements for ePaper business.

ePaper modules with the built-in high definition LTPS backplane will be demonstrated in JDI's booth #917 at The Society of Information Display (SID) "Display Week", at the Los Angeles Convention Center, May 23 - May 25, 2017, in Los Angeles, California, USA.
