October 8, 2013 (Tokyo, Japan): Japan Display Inc. (JDI), a global leader in mobile display technologies, announced mass production start of the world's first "Pixel Eyes" 5.0-inch Full-HD (1,080 x 1,920 pixels) TFT LCD module. "Pixel Eyes" is JDI's proprietary in-cell integrated touch functionality.

JDI's unique touch controller drive system1 realizes a high touch sensitivity under various operating environments, including stylus pens, to ensure touch usability. Integration of the touch functionality into the LCD eliminates the need for an external touch panel. The configuration also reduces module thickness2. Since "Pixel Eyes" does not require an external touch panel, the configuration reduces optical reflections at the component surface boundary interfaces and improves visibility. For the same reason, transmittance is increased compared to conventional modules with external touch panels3, contributing to an increase in module brightness. "Pixel Eyes" is becoming more important to cope with wide and rapid fluctuations in smartphone demand. JDI has achieved the world's first display, with pixel density over 400ppi, with integrated touch functionality, in the 5.0-inch Full-HD TFT LCD module4.

JDI produces "Pixel Eyes" at its newest 6th-Generation low temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) LCD line and other LTPS lines. Mass production of "Pixel Eyes" has already been available in resolution formats of VGA+ (720 x 480 pixels), FWVGA (854 x 480 pixels), qHD (540 x 960 pixels) and 720HD (720 x 1280 pixels). The new 5.0-inch Full-HD module expands the "Pixel Eyes" line-up.

We will exhibit these displays in Japan Display Inc. booth on October 23 to 25, 2013, during FPD International 2013 in Pacifico Yokohama, Japan.

Prototype specifications
Screen size (diagonal) 5.0inch (12.6cm)
Number of pixels 1,080 (x RGB) x 1,920  (Full-HD)
Resolution density 445ppi
Display mode Transmissive IPS
Viewing angle > 160 degrees (CR > 100 : 1)
Dimensions 63.6mm (W) x 115.8mm (H)
Surface luminance 450cd/m2 (typ.)
NTSC ratio 71%
Contrast ratio 1000 : 1(typ.)

1 The touch controller drive system realizes a high signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio under various operating environments. It synchronizes the LCD driver and the touch controller, and detects the touch event.

2 Approximately 30% thinner than conventional modules with external touch panels, and approximately 10% thinner than recently popular modules which adopt a touch sensor function on the cover lens.

3 The transmittance is increased by approximately 10% compared to conventional modules with external touch panels.
