JDI Display Awarded Technology Prize at Digital Camera Grand-prix

December 6, 2013 (Tokyo, Japan): Japan Display Inc. (JDI), a global leader in mobile display technologies, was awarded the Technology Prize for its "WhiteMagic" at the Digital Camera Grand-prix1 in Japan. The Digital Camera Grand-prix competition is primarily for cameras and their peripheral equipment. It is a rare case when a device manufacturer is awarded. JDI was ranked high due to the wide recognition of its innovative technologies which major camera brands use to appeal their products' advantages.

"WhiteMagic" adds a White (W) sub-pixel into a predominantly Red/Green/Blue (RGB) LCD panel to improve picture brightness. It is beneficial for outdoor visibility by increasing luminance almost 1.5 to 2 times while maintaining the same LCD backlight power consumption level as a conventional RGB LCD product2. It makes it easy to focus or check a photo image under strong sunshine. Fundamentally, "WhiteMagic" scans the input picture image data through a unique algorithm which derives the optimum signal processing to drive the LCD panel and backlight. As the result, its influence on picture quality is minimized. Since it has another mode, to reduce the power consumption of the LCD backlight while achieving the same brightness level, it is suitable not only for digital cameras but also for other various applications like smartphones or other customers' requirements.

JDI is producing "WhiteMagic" not only at its conventional production lines, but also at its newest 6th-Generation low temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) line.

1 The Digital Camera Grand-prix Committee consists of photographers, critics, and distribution channel members, including mass merchants, who are experts on digital-imaging related products in Japan. Leading products, from a consumer's point of view, are reviewed. The Technology Prize is presented to epoch-making, innovative, newsworthy, and outstanding technological approaches.
