News Release: The former Toshiba Mobile Display

October 20, 2004

Production Launched for 15.4" Wide-Format LTPS LCD Panels for Notebook PCs Offering LCD TV-Quality Color Purity.

Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Co., Ltd. (TMD) has started the mass production of a low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) thin film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) for notebook PCs featuring a 15.4" diagonal wide-format screen, with 44 percent improvement in color reproduction range, and approximately 58 percent improvement in brightness compared to existing models(*1).

By further enhancing our core LTPS manufacturing technology, this LCD has realized approximately 72 percent of the NTSC standard in color reproducibility(*2) while ensuring a luminance of 300cd/m2. As a result, the panel has achieved color reproducibility equivalent to color CRTs and ensures adequate viewing visibility for multiple viewers.

In consideration of the product's intended use for notebook PCs, the electrical signal interfaces are designed to ensure compatibility with existing products, including connectors, which means existing graphic chips can be used without any modifications.

There is an increasing demand in the home-use notebook PC market for LCD panels that provide high luminance, high color purity, and wide viewing angle to allow high-quality reproduction of movies, TV programs and other video contents on PCs with DVD players or TV tuners installed. TMD accurately answers various needs by offering a wide selection of high value-added and differentiated products such as ultra-lightweight and low-power consumption 14.1" SXGA+ and 12.1" XGA LCD modules.

This panel is produced by an affiliated company in Singapore, and will be exhibited at FPD International 2004 at the Pacific Convention Plaza (PACIFICO) Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan from October 20, 2004.

(*1) Based on the comparison with the existing model of 15.4" WXGA panels for notebook PCs (color reproducibility: approx. 50 percent of NTSC standard, luminance: approx. 190 cd/m2)
(*2) For panels in mobile applications, a high color purity model with 72 percent NTSC ratio is now available.
