Bringing the Metaverse to Life

Leading the global display industry with ultra high quality, ultra high resolution display technology

01 Achieving Overwhelmingly High Image Quality with Ultra-High Resolution Panels

When a part of the image on the left end is enlarged, as shown in the figure above, there is a difference in appearance due to the resolution. On typical smartphones, the resolution is about 400ppi, so it looks rough when enlarged with a VR device lens. Therefore, higher resolution is required for VR, and our company mass-produced products with 651ppi in 2016 and 803ppi in 2018. Furthermore, in 2021, we were the first in the world to mass-produce an LCD display with the highest resolution of 1201ppi, and we have now achieved development up to the 2000ppi class.

02 Achieving clear display with high-speed response liquid crystal + backlight blinking.

When wearing a head-mounted display, if no measures are taken, blurring and distortion can occur as shown in the image on the far left. When applying a high-speed response liquid crystal, it improves somewhat like the second image from the left, but there is still some blurring and distortion. On the other hand, when using a regular liquid crystal and only performing backlight blinking, a "ghosting phenomenon" occurs where images look doubled, as shown in the second image from the right. To obtain a clear display as shown in the image on the far right, it is key to implement both high-speed response liquid crystal and backlight blinking.

03 The Future of Virtual Reality Devices

The most important aspect of VR devices is the sense of immersion into the world of images. To achieve this immersion, realistic image quality, motion blur suppression, and low latency are necessary, and we have listed the required specifications. At JDI, we have the technical ability to meet the requirements in all areas. Furthermore, by applying eLEAP technology to VR devices, a new world will unfold.

JDI's latest high-resolution VR

Here is an example of our products as shown in the table above.

Technology1
Advanced LTPS

For the 1201ppi display for VR, we have adopted JDI's unique Advanced LTPS, which enables the high aperture ratio indispensable for VR displays. With conventional LTPS, there are areas that cannot be lit, but with Advanced LTPS, they can. This allows us to increase brightness

Technology2
Local Dimming

The contrast issue, which is generally considered a challenge for liquid crystal displays, can be resolved with local dimming technology. This technology optimizes the output image by controlling the backlight output, making it possible to achieve high contrast and low power consumption.
Products equipped with local dimming technology consist of an LCD panel and a backlight (Mini LEDs). For example, in relatively dark areas like the top of the screen, the LED of the backlight is turned off or lit at a dim brightness. On the other hand, in bright areas like the center of the screen, the LED is lit brightly, enabling high contrast and low power consumption compared to the dark areas.
The local dimming algorithm performs [Step 1: Analysis of the input image], and from the analyzed data, it determines the LED current at the timing of [Step 2: Backlight output control]. Based on the determined content, the output image (LCD) and backlight output are decided at [Step 3: Image optimization]. This is the sequence of steps.

Technology3
Impulse Display

JDI‘s high-speed response liquid crystal boasts a response speed that is 5 times faster than conventional IPS products. For backlight blinking, we adjust the backlight illumination time.In the case of a 90Hz product, one frame equals 11.1 milliseconds. For example, in products like regular smartphones, the LED remains lit for this 11.1 milliseconds. However, in VR, it lights up instantaneously for only 1.1 milliseconds, which is 10% of the total time. This allows us to achieve a clear display without blurring or distortion.
